Saturday's King's Plate at Woodbine was a case of so-close-yet-so-far for the wonderful Tom's Magic, who put in a Herculean effort in swooping late to claim second in the historic $1 million event.
Settled wide and towards the rear of the pack for much of race, CJ Thoroughbreds and Mo Speed Racing's Tom's Magic was caught a tad flat-footed going into the far turn.
But when Rafael Hernandez angled him around the skirt-tails of the pack into the home stretch, Tom's Magic's long, devouring stride came into full effect, allowing him to eat up a mountain to get within 2 1/2 lengths of the runaway winner Mansetti by the wire.
Tom's Magic has proven a revelation this year, already winning a couple stake races. But this was arguably his finest performance to date, and this strapping son of Justify will surely have plenty of other chances to take gold on the big stage.
CJ Thoroughbreds have another bite of the big race apple later today, when Song of Norway lines up in stall 13 in today's $100,000 Satin and Lace Stakes, a six-furlong sprint at Presque Isle.
This four-year-old daughter of Flatter will strip fitter for her seasonal debut at Delaware Park in June, and is a 20-1 shot with the Morning Line to prevail under Willie Martinez.
Here's the rest of the stable's entries this week, per Equibase:
